Because
according
to these
experts,
injuries
can be
almost 100%
avoided if
you and I
would
simply
teach the
‘right’
things.
Which
according
to the
special, we
do not. We
simply take
their
money.
Apparently
we are just
in it for
the
money.

So
how does
that tie
into
legal
matters
and
suits?
Well, the
inference
by Bryant
Gumble in
the piece
is that
‘somebody
out to be
sued for
such
negligence’.
What
impact do
you think
that
comment
had with
regards
to
parents
that have
had a
child
with an
injury or
needing
surgery
or trial
lawyers
looking
for an
additional
revenue
stream?

your

hour. You
probably
are not in
charge of
how much he
pitches in
games. You
are almost
certainly
not in
control of
the other
167 hours
of his
week. And
yet you may
very well
be named in
a suit if
this young
man hurts
his arm
pitching
and
requires
surgery.
Certainly
others
will be
named in
the suit
as well,
but the
key
things
here
are…1)
Who
specifically
profited
by this
young man
pitching.
That
would be
you.
Strike
one! 2)
Who is
supposed
to be the
expert on
pitching
and
thereby
an expert
in
pitching
injury
and the
protector
of this
young man
and his
health
and well
being?
That
would be
you.
Strike
two! 3)
Who
typically
has
assets
that a
lawyer
can go
after?
Again,
that
would be
you.
Strike
three! Go
get good
legal
counsel.
This
isn’t
going
away
anytime
soon
folks but
there are
steps we
are
taking to
beat the
crap out
of this
wolf
before he
even
shows up
on our
door. You
should do
the
same.
Secret #5:
Eliminate the
things that
could have you
walking the
floor at
night
Staff
Issues:
Selecting and
hiring the
right people.
This is HUGE.
We’ve all
kissed our
share of toads.
It wasn’t
pretty or
pleasant. If we
were honest,
this one area
has kept us up
walking the
floor many
nights.
After
we’ve
hired
them, we
then must
get those
chosen
few the
best
possible
training
which
will help
them
produce
the
highest
quality
of
instruction
anywhere
in the
area.
That is
the
essence
of great
marketing.
If you
can
prove
demonstratively
that you
are the
best
instruction
available
in your
area…you
are in
good
shape. If
on the
other
hand you
just
‘SAY’ you
have the
best
training…you
are
automatically
just one
of the
many.
Anyone
can ‘say’
anything,
and they
usually
do.
After
we’ve
gone to
considerable
lengths
to train
them, we
then must
create
systems
and
contracts
that hold
these
people to
their
promises
to us and
to our
clients…keeping
them on
track and
on time.
And
finally,
we must
do our
part in
keeping
these
people
from
taking
the
clientele
we helped
them
build,
outside
of the
Academy
or to
another
academy.
Boy, is
this a
universal
problem.
It
Sounded
Good
at
the
Time
Right?
|
Secret #6:
Hiring the
Mercenary
rarely works
out well for
ANYONE.
Unfortunately
a
VERY
common
thing!
|
Staff
issues of
integrity,
professionalism
and
competence
will never
go away.
There will
never be a
perfect
system with
regards to
dealing
with
people.
However,
95% of all
Academies
operate by
what I call
the ‘hired
gun’ or
‘mercenary’
program. We
simply hire
a ‘name”,
someone we
think has
some clout
or
background
in the
area. After
some time
elapses,
they begin
to develop
relationships
and
clientele,
and THEY
become the
ones with
the
power.
The
traditional
‘hired
gun’
program
ABSOLUTELY
fails
90+% of
the time.
It almost
always
ends with
the hired
gun
moonlighting
or
him/her
moving to
‘greener
pastures’…usually
with your
clientele…and
even with
a ‘non
compete’
contract.
And you
are left
with a
hole in
your cash
flow. You
then go
find the
next
hired gun
and start
the
process
all over
again.
Wasn’t it
Einstein
who said
‘Insanity
is doing
the same
thing
over
&
over
again and
each time
expecting
a
different
result?
In all
frankness
then, I
believe
this
nasty
cycle
fits that
description.
That’s
insanity.
It
doesn’t
have to
be that
way. We
use a
system
that can
help you
attract,
select,
hire,
train,
hold
accountable,
lead and
manage
instructors.
While of
course it
doesn’t
solve
every
problem,
it sure
solves
most of
the
severe
issues
that
could
potentially
keep you
walking
the floor
at
night.
Secret #7 :Make
Hay While the
Sun Shines! ALL
Billable Hours
are NOT
equal.
Maximizing
billable
hours:
Many
Academy owners
I consult fail
to realize that
they literally
only have 5
hours each week
night and
possibly 36
hours total
each week to
make payroll,
cover all
expenses and
then hopefully
eek out some
profit for you
the owner…who
is in fact
taking almost
all the risk.
Doesn’t sound
right does
it?
The
owner
gets the
‘net’.
And
unfortunately
some
months
that net
is
sometimes
small or
occasionally…
not there
at all.
Therefore,
if you
want to
have a
substantial
‘NET’
left over
at the
end of
the
month,
then
maximizing
your
billable
hours is
absolutely
critical
to
success.
Just
one
example:
7:00pm on
Wednesday
night is
NOT the
same as
3:00pm or
9:00pm.
If you
are
treating
all of
your
billable
hours the
same...
filling
your
Academy
with one
on one
lessons
at
7:00pm,
someone
should
hit you
in the
head with
a rolled
up copy
of your
2007
income
tax
report.
Not
smart.
If
you
get
nothing
else…GET
THIS

7:00pm is prime
time for
families.
Create a
program that
maximizes prime
time. Doing
‘onesies’ and
‘twosies’ at
6-8pm is a slow
death.

Everything!
Optimizing
Slow
Periods
:
Most of
us
understand
where our
peaks and
valleys are.
Most of us are
more than aware
on what is our
hot time and
what is our
slow
time.
What
is far
less
developed
is an
exact 4
part plan
on 1)
maximizing
our hot
time…2)
expanding
our hot
time…3)
maximizing
our slow
time as
well as
4)
constricting
our slow
time. At
the Texas
Baseball

shift

carefully

Don’t Chase The
Dollar…Attract

Viable Revenue
Streams:
Unfortunately I
see it FAR too
often in the
Academies I
consult for
doing: Birthday
parties,
sleepovers,
lock downs,
cheer camp, pro
shops with
thousands of
dollars of
inventory.etc.
The list is
endless. All
these are
simple efforts
attempting to
squeeze some
extra profits
out of the
process. I of
course have no
problem with
generating
profit…but
sometimes our
efforts are
counterproductive.
Let me
explain.
The damage
created to
their image as
a ‘Mercedes
Benz Academy’
by trying to be
a jack of all
trades and in
fact being a
master of none,
is
incalculable
. These
academies often
look like they
are ambulance
chasers…needy
and desperate
for cash. And
probably, the
image fits the
situation.
Bottom line:
You don’t want
to chase
money…you want
money to chase
you.
This issue of
choosing
productive,
viable and
aligned revenue
streams truly
encapsulates
all of the
other 8 issues.
The following
are the results
of poor choices
in new revenue
stream
selections:
Ø
Increases burn
out…now you are
doing 6 things
at once instead
of 3-4. As
Stephen Covey
once wrote:
“The main
thing is to
keep the main
thing the main
thing.”
What are your
1-3 MAIN things
that you wish
to be known
for? And are
you doing those
exceptionally
well? Is your
involvement in
other ‘side
revenue
streams’
inhibiting your
ability to be
exceptional at
your MAIN
thing? If so,
stop doing
them. If you
continue, your
rate of burnout
will increase
exponentially.
Instead develop
a revenue
stream that
already fits
what you do. A
revenue stream
that is in
alignment with
your mission
and fits
naturally/seamlessly
into your
business.
Ø
Makes you
appear far more
like a Wal-Mart
than a Mercedes
Benz. Most of
the time these
revenue streams
are a classic
attempt to be
all things to
all people.
This strategy
has no long
term future. In
whatever you
do…ask
yourself, does
this new
revenue stream
make our
business MORE
like Mercedes
Benz or LESS?
There is where
you
begin.
Ø
Confuses and
Waters Down
Your Referrals-
When you ‘do it
all’ no one is
really sure
exactly what
you do best.
But everybody
intuitively
knows…no one
does it ALL
well. It’s hard
to create a
Raving Fan who
tells everybody
about what a
great job you
did with
Bobby’s
pitching this
off-season and
what a bitchin’
birthday party
you threw last
week.
Ø
Places you at
unnecessary
risk to injury
suits. In your
pursuit of a
dollar, have
you in fact
invited people
in your doors
who have little
or no loyalty
to you, don’t
know what you
are all about,
in fact
couldn’t care
less and are
just there to
screw around?
My friends
that’s a recipe
for disaster.
Think long and
hard before you
choose such a
course. You’ve
got to fill out
a 7 page
application
and
go through a 30
minute
interview
before you even
get in our
doors for
instruction.
And while that
doesn’t solve
every problem,
I’m sure you’ll
admit it does
significantly
narrow the
field of
potential
people who
would, at
minimum,
eagerly
litigate a
fraudulent
claim. And
remember bogus
claims cost
money, time and
emotion as
well.

Under utilize,
over extend or
misuse staff.
Often to your
staff, these
revenue streams
often look like
you’re shooting
in the dark.
These
apparently
unrelated
revenue streams
can make you
appear to your
staff as
rudderless…lacking
a clear mission
or a
vision.

Takes up time
or space that
could otherwise
be used to
maximize
profits
Ø
Makes you look
desperate in
slow times and
greedy in busy
times
But the
reality is
developing new,
productive and
viable revenue
streams is the
life blood of
many
businesses
